Some laugh in the face of the superstitions surrounding the number 13. Some, in fact 9-10% of Americans, have their qualms about this number. Others suffer from triskaidekaphobia, the scientific name for the fear of 13. Where did this irrational fear come from? One theory comes from the Bible: there were 13 people at the table at the Last Supper. The 13th to arrive was Judas, who betrayed Jesus. In another story, this time from Norse mythology, the primary 12 gods were dining together peacefully until the god of mischief (and frequent superhero-movie villain) Loki showed up. As soon as this 13th guest arrived, chaos and carnage ensued. Since we didn't want to have chaos and carnage at club this week, nobody dared score 13. Actually 80% of the players (your faithful blogger included) couldn't make 12. Oy. This week's results can be found below: Larry's 12 points this week catapulted him to the lead in club. He's got a 21 point lead over the next closest player, and more than double Fran Ward's score, who rounds out the top 10.
In other news, 14 players associated with Club 58 took to the streets and traveled to Virginia Beach to compete in the Pre-Turkey Shoot Out. Jennifer Johnson ended in second place in the Friday Satellite, John Medeiros finished 3-4 in the Main, and Jeff Raynes beat out Larry Phifer to take the top prize in the Consolation. Raleigh brought home the bacon this weekend for sure! To finish out this week's statistics, three teams scored some dinero of their own: Third team went to Frank Abernathy and Megan Player. Second team went to visitor Bill Eilers and Ernie Hodgson. First team went to Jennifer Johnson and Jerry Gooden. The standings based on 13 weeks are listed below. Have a great week, y'all and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! ~ Jennifer

We missed a prime opportunity Monday night to enjoy some Cohibas and sip some Havana Club Máximo Extra Rum to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana, Cuba. Though, come to think of it, lighting up would probably be frowned upon by the Restaurant. And $1700 does seem a bit much to spend on a beverage, so... Moving on. We've played a duodecad of weeks, each time striving to score a dodecuplet (or better). We are one third of the way through our season. Twelves come up a lot. The number of twelves (or better) that we earn measures our success in this crazy game. The ancient Mesopotamians were likely the first people to use 12 as a unit of measurement. The concept probably developed because each human finger has three joints, making it possible to count to 12 on one hand using the thumb. The number 12 also had symbolic significance in the ancient world, because each year consists of approximately 12 lunar cycles. This week the twelves were with five of us, with just this week's winner, Frank Abernathy, scoring better than that. The week's results are below. Jerry Gooden and Sean Lang took third team.
Megan Player and Andy Wagner took second team. Glenn McMahon and Joe Greiner took first team. This weekend many Club 58ers are off to Virginia Beach to try to win the Pre-Turkey Shootout. Let's bring some cash and prizes home, y'all! ~ Jennifer The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 marked the end of hostilities in World War I…the “great” war… the “war to end all wars”. Armistice Day | Remembrance Day | Veterans Day The nation owes a great debt to its veterans, whose service to the nation spans every decade, every year, every day of our country's existence. Through untold courage and sacrifice, America’s veterans have secured the liberty which the founding fathers sought to establish here in the new world. Whenever and wherever the nation has called -- in times of darkness and danger as well as in times of peace and prosperity -- America's veterans have been there. Veterans have proudly carried the torch of liberty for all to see. ~ General Colin L. Powell, U.S. Army, Retired. Today, we come together to honor the brave Canadians in uniform who have served our country throughout our history. They’ve built peace. They’ve defended democracy. And they’ve enabled countless people to live in freedom – at home and around the world. Today, we pay tribute to our veterans, to those who have been injured in the line of duty, and to all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They stood for liberty, and sacrificed their future for the future of others. Their selflessness and courage continue to inspire Canadians who serve today. Today, we thank our service members, past and present, for all they have done to keep us and people around the world safe. They represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian. ~ Prime Minister Justin Trudeau We had 27 on hand this week, including some Veterans, and two visitors from Club 102 – Henry Douglass and Robert Smothers. We had a notable missing fixture this week – Luther Lanier was not at his customary position at the end of the tables with his ever present community gum. Luther had to have emergency surgery (as told to us by David Lambeth). We wish Luther a speedy recovery from this procedure, send him gentle hugs and healing thoughts, and hope to see him back at club. On Monday night, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators by a score of 8-2. Three of our members, die hard ‘Canes fans (Allan Simpson, Andy Wagner, and Joe Greiner) chose club over Canes. Only one of them *cough*Joe*cough* scored more points than the ‘Canes did goals. In fact, almost half our players were unable to outscore the ‘Canes. J We had three players tie the ‘Canes with 8 total points, and seven who had fewer. We also had two near Grand Slams! Fran Ward, who won the night with a 19/8/+158, and our Fearless Leader Cathy Perkins, who took second with an 18/8/+109. Wow! Six others earned points as well. SO. If you're keeping score, that's 8 of 27 scoring points, 11 who couldn't best the 'Canes score, and the rest scoring amidships in the "close but no cigar" ranks. First team (with 23 combined points) went to David Lambeth and Jerry Gooden. Second team (21 combined points) went to Jeff Seidenstein and Sean Lang. And rounding out the money, Third team (with the better combined 19 points) went to Jennifer Johnson and Joe Greiner. The battle for club supremacy continues, with a lead change this week. With neither Kristy Haught nor Andy scoring points this week, they left the door open for Larry Phifer were able to slide up the ranks to take spots the top spot. The top-5 is all within “one good week” of taking the lead, which in this writer’s opinion is more fun than a blowout. Between first and fifth are a mere 13 points. The top ten are shown below. Have a good week, everyone! See y'all next week! ~ Jennifer Alright, alright, alright! Eighteen souls celebrated Matthew McConaughey Day at High Park this week. The delightful actor turned the big 5-0 this week.
There were definitely struggles aplenty this week. More than 2/3 of the field failed to earn GRPs. As Andy Wagner would say, "Booooo!" We introduced ourselves to who we think will be our "New Tracey" -- a lovely young lady named Jenna. Hopefully we didn't scare her off :) Jennifer Johnson and Brian Wilson (welcome back, Brian!) joined Jeff "I Hate This Game" Seidenstein at the bottom of the pack this week, each winning only two games. Oy. Congratulations to John Morch, Jeff Raynes, Kristy Haught, and Ernie Hodgson, who (in addition to those well-earned and much-desired GRPs) took home this week's prize money. First team honors went to Larry Phifer (second week in a row) and Frank Abernathy. Second team was Tom Goeschel (second week in a row) and Catherine Perkins. And rounding out the money was third team Allan Simpson and Jerry Gooden. Though Kristy scored 13 points this week, it wasn't enough to wrest first place from Andy's grasp. He hangs on by a narrow three-point margin. Here are the standings (top-10), through 10 weeks: And for those of you who have already received your newest Cribbage World, there are three advertisements; one for Facebook Group help, and two for a new "Spare Board Loaner" program. All were developed by your intrepid blogger :) Have a good week, y'all! ~ Jennifer |
