No, it's not one of those Hallmark Holidays -- it's a math geek thing. A rhombicuboctahedron is a geometric shape with 26 faces. I chose it in honor of this being week 26 here at good ol' Club 58. Week 26 occurred on February 24th, which is the anniversary of a couple of "Notable Name" songs. The first is "Help me Rhonda" which was recorded on this date by the Beach Boys in 1965. When Larry Phifer needs a cut, you may hear him sing part of the refrain of this timeless tune. The other song is "Roxanne" by The Police, which was released in the US on this date in 1979.
Larry's refrain was a winner this week, helping him earn points this week and pull first place even further out of reach from the rest of the crowd. Top honors went to Luther Lanier, with a 14 card. Luther was very excited not only with the win, but that he'd be picking up his new leg on Tuesday. Andy Wagner (13) and yours truly (12) rounded out the place money. I also FINALLY GRADUATED FROM CUTTING SCHOOL! Not only did I cut the deck such that Joe Greiner dealt me three 5's and a 10, I also found the case 5 on cut to give me a 28-hand! Our Fearless Leader, Cathy Perkins was out sick this week, so Jeff Raynes was the "Not Cathy" this week :) We hope that Cathy's feeling better. And we welcomed Allan Simpson back from hip replacement surgery, crutch and all. Glad to have you back! There were three 12 cards that didn't earn place money, but those "non-winner" cards made for excellent partnerships. Third team went to John Medeiros (12) and David Lambeth (6). Second team was won by Dot Davis (10) and Ernie Hodgson (8). First team went to Jeff Raynes (12) and Glenn McMahon(12). The full results from this week are below: Larry and Cathy keep the one-two positions for another week. The three and four spots have been switched, with Andy edging out Frank for third. The field from 4-10 is really close. One really good card can bump you up. Current top-10 standings are below: In tournament news, March Madness is coming up the weekend of March 20th. There are 22 folks registered thus far, with 5 others on the "last minute decision" list. I'm hoping we can hit 65 (or more) again this year, so we can break into that additional bracket! Also, Club 58 will be hosting a Grass Roots National Tournament on Saturday April 11 at our regular spot, and with the same delicious menu as in the spring. For those of you heading out west for the pre-Reno tournaments, we'll miss ya this week. Good luck and "Break a Peg"! See [most of] ya'll Monday! ~ Jennifer

We could talk about how February 17 was President's Day, but we all learned about Washington and Lincoln in grade school (us non-Canadians, that is). Instead, we'll talk Beatles. On February 17 1967, The Fab Four released "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" as double-A side singles. In "Penny Lane" the lyrics make reference to a street in Liverpool, and make mention of the sights and characters that McCartney recalled from his upbringing in the city. Lennon based "Strawberry Fields" on his childhood memories of playing in the garden of Strawberry Field, a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool. I imagine the songs wouldn't have been quite so iconic if McCartney grew up on Main Street, and Lennon played in Central Park.
We had another week where our visitors came into prize money -- this time taking first and last place in the cashola. Henry Douglass and Robert Smothers came out to play, and aside from a brutal skunking perpetrated on Robert, the two did very well, with Henry scoring 16 points, and Robert coming in with a strong 13. Glenn McMahon and Peter Amacher had great nights as well; with Pete not only earning his first GRPs of the season after dancing agonizingly around the 12-mark all year, but also earning a 28-hand with help from yours truly! Yep, I dealt Pete all the 5s; he found a face card on the cut. Congrats, Pete! Liz Henderson also had a good night as well, fitting, as it was her birthday...happy birthday, Liz! Third team went to Bernard Whitfield (11) and Frank Abernathy (6). Second team was Brian Wilson (10) and Larry Phifer (9). First team honors went to John Medeiros (12) and Dot Davis (7). The full night's results are below: Aside from Larry, who keeps a frustratingly huge lead even when the cards abandon him, the rest of the top-10 field is pretty closely bunched together. Take a look: Have a great week, y'all!
~ Jennifer We open with some news; some great, some not so great. On the great side, Luther shared a photo with opponents of him being fitted with a NEW LEG! That's right, Luther may be up and around walking. How very exciting!! And on the not-so-good, Allan Simpson is having hip-replacement surgery and will miss a few (more) weeks whilst in recovery. For those of you who weren't at club and therefore unable to sign the card with your well-wishes, healing thoughts sent Allan's way, please. OK. That being said... Happy National Cribbage Day! Week 24 is in the books. While we celebrate National Cribbage Day on Suckling's birthday, February 10, some other classics have anniversaries on that day, too.
Week 24 saw SO MANY BIG CARDS! Jeff Raynes had a near perfect night; losing the very last game. Liz Henderson's second place 17 card was almost a 19. There were multiple 13s, with a stray 12 or 14 peppered in for good measure. With five prize places, NONE of the 12s or 13s scored place points. But luckily, they were good enough to make decent partners. First team went to Joe Greiner (13) and Bernard Whitfield (11) Second team went to John Medeiros (12) and Kristy Haught (10) Third team went to Jennifer Johnson (13) and Dot Davis (6) Full results from the evening are below: While there have been some changes in the ORDER of the top-10 for the club, the players remain the same. And Larry Phifer maintains a 52-point lead over Catherine, who keeps the number-two slot. The Club Top Ten is below: I will probably see many of you in Virginia Beach this weekend -- safe travels and better pegs, everyone! For the rest, see ya'll Monday! ~ Jennifer February 3rd marked our 23rd week in Grassroots play. On this date in 1882 Circus owner P. T. Barnum bought Jumbo, his world-famous elephant. Preparing to board trains in St. Thomas, Ontario on September 15, 1885, Jumbo was hit by an oncoming locomotive and killed. According to legend, Jumbo sacrificed his own life to save a baby elephant. After the tragedy, Barnum commissioned what was called the world's largest taxidermy job ever performed. After a four-year world tour with the stuffed Jumbo as the centerpiece, the pachyderm's hide finally arrived at Tufts University in Medford, Mass (my Alma Mater) with much celebration in March 1889. For 86 years, Jumbo stood in Tufts' Barnum Hall and was a veritable mecca on campus. Students, parents and other campus visitors would pop pennies in his trunk or give a tug on his tail to bring luck for an upcoming exam or athletic competition. Jumbo mania came to a fiery end on April 14, 1975 when Barnum Hall and the beloved elephant were consumed in an electrical fire. The Tufts mascot is, in fact, responsible for the introduction of the word “jumbo” to our language. The term had never been used to describe something humongous until the enormous elephant—he stood more than 11 feet tall and weighed over five tons—came along. With twenty players this week, there were no "Jumbo" payouts, but there was a big card. Miss Dot took home top honors with a 16 card; her first GRPs of 2020. There were too many 13s and 14s (and that one pesky 16) for any of the 12s to get into the place money, but all the 12s were good enough for partner cash. Third team went to Frank Abernathy (10) and Liz Henderson (9) Second team went to our Fearless Leader Cathy Perkins (12) and Larry Phifer (8) And first team went to Richard Coash (12) and Jennifer Johnson (12) The week's results are below. While Larry Phifer didn't score any GRPs this week, he still maintains a formidable lead over the rest of the pack. Fran Ward and Catherine both gained a little on Larry, but he still has QUITE the advantage. Never fear, there will be another opportunity to win large bunches of GRPs. Club 58 will host its Grass Roots National Tournament on the Saturday before Easter, as was done last year. Look for flyers at club soon. For those of you going to the tournaments in Florida this weekend, I wish you safe travels and swift pegs. Have a great week, ya'll! ~ Jennifer |
