Happy Birthday Barbie! Yep, Barbie her debut on March 9, 1959. She was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. Barbie’s appearance was modeled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic strip character. Since 1959, over one billion dolls in the Barbie family have been sold around the world. As the coronavirus makes its way around the world, Italy has basically quarantined the entire country; only those with a valid work or family reason that cannot be postponed will be allowed to travel, and people are forbidden to gather in public. It's not the first time that Italy has taken an aggressive position; on March 9, 1562, kissing in public was banned in Naples.
Closer to home, we had 19 players on Monday night. Our Fearless Leader, Catherine Perkins, was notably absent, staying home to care for husband Russ, who has been feeling poorly. We hope Russ is on the mend. Our 28-hand streak has been broken -- nobody caught the elusive quad 5s this week. There were TONS of 20+ point hands, but none quite so high. Next week is another week.... This week, we had a difference of 7 peg points separate first place (Liz Henderson) and second (Andy Wagner). Both had near-grand-slams, scoring 16/8 cards. Nicely done! Bernard Whitfield had another good week, scoring 14 points to take third, and the money places were rounded out by Ernie Hodgson and Jennifer Johnson, each with 12. Luther Lanier's 12/5 just missed the money. With 19 players, there were only two teams this week: 2nd team was Allan Simpson (8) and Rick Rinzler (8) -- Fellas, I have your money :) 1st team was Joe Greiner (10) and John Medeiros (9) Full results for the night can be found below: In the race for club leader, Larry Phifer gave us a little more room to advance as he stayed out west for more sanctioned tournaments. Andy gained on him with his 16 card, closing to within 46. With 6 weeks and the GRNT remaining, he COULD do it... but I suspect Larry won't stay GRP-silent for much longer. The rest of the top-10 are all within 20 points, so a couple of good weeks (or a good showing in April's GRNT) will see changes in the rankings. Good luck to all!! The top-10 is shown below: As of today, I have 40 players either registered or committed to play, 5 probables, and 2 possibles for March Madness – a far cry from the 65 we had last year. I haven't heard from many of the Virginia and Florida peeps who usually come; hopefully it's just Reno Residuals, and not fear of COVID-19. I'm hoping that my mailbox is stuffed with registrations this week; I'll keep you posted. Have a great week, y'all, see you Monday! ~ Jennifer With this-coming weekend being the JPW ACC Open in The Biggest Little City in the World, I thought a little history about the host state was in order. Especially since March 2, our tournament date, plays into it. On March 2, 1861, congress created the Territory of Nevada with Genoa as its capital. It remained a territory until October 31, 1864, when it was admitted to the Union as the State of Nevada, with Carson City as its capital. Nevada can boast the largest public works project to ever take place in the U.S.: the Hoover Dam. It actually has greater structural volume than Egypt's largest pyramid. Nevada was also the first state to ratify the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This amendment prohibits the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on their race, color or previous condition of servitude. Reno was officially established in 1868, the same year that the transcontinental railroad, which paralleled the Truckee River, reached the town. In 1874, the University of Nevada was founded as a land-grant university, and in 1885, the primary campus was built on a rise of land overlooking Reno from the north. From its inception, the university was an integral component of the young town’s identity and contributed to Reno’s reputation as a cultural center. Reno became a quickie divorce destination in the early 1900's, and in 1931, Nevada legalized gambling. Reno was a front runner in creating the model of destination hotel/casino gaming – a model which has been replicated throughout the world. Several of our own are either on the way to, or already settled in, Reno for the JPW ACC Open. I hope you had safe travels, and will again coming home. I wish you good cards and swift pegs! Jeff Raynes earned GRPs for the 5th week in a row (!!) Way to go, Jeff! We also had a guest, Bob Murray from Club 26 in East Hartford, CT. We didn't treat him very nicely, allowing only 3 wins, but we hope he joins us again when he's in town! Bernard Whitfield came in second this week, so if "You're Down" with Bernard, you most likely need to pay up, if you haven't already. This week’s 28 hand goes to Dot Davis! This is three weeks in a row now someone in club has had a 28. Wonder who will find the 28 next week… With 23 players, we paid out 6 places this week. If you didn’t score 13 or better, you made a good partner. 3rd team went to John Medeiros (9) and Dot Davis (7). 2nd team went to Liz Henderson (11) and Jennifer Johnson (8). First team went to Ernie Hodgson (12) and Sean Lang (8). Full results are below: While Larry Phifer still has a firm grasp on first place, Andy Wagner has caught up to within 62 of taking over. So with nine weeks left, plus the Grass Roots National in April, it is statistically possible for him to take the lead. Actually, as long as we can shut Larry out, any of the top 10 has a shot, if the players can earn GRPs in 7 or more of the last 9 weeks, plus earn GRPs in the GRNT. Sounds like a tall order.... but who's up for the challenge? Current top-10 standings are below: March Madness now has 30 registered entrants, with another 3 who have mentioned they will likely come. Remember, you can give me your check when you see me on Monday, or pay at the door, whatever your preference. If you could let me know if you're planning to attend, I'd be much obliged! Have a good rest of your week and weekend, everyone; see ya'll on Monday! ~ Jennifer |
