For those who haven’t heard. Jennifer climbed the mountain and sailed through the winners bracket, beating Rob Medeiros in the finals of the winner’s bracket to stand alone undefeated. However, as Machiavelli wrote “If you go after the king, you need to kill the king.” Rob came back from winning the loser’s bracket to take on Jennifer in the final. He won the next 2 matches and took the title. I hope you all congratulate Jennifer on her accomplishment.
Just in case you didn’t notice, Jennifer was an important volunteer helping the whole 5 days run smoothly. She accomplished what she did on the felt in addition to all she did for the tournament. Well played. Well done. Raise a glass. On a secondary note, the entire 5 days came off smoothly. Megan did an outstanding job organizing and was helped by many volunteers from our Grass Roots and others from throughout the country. Please be sure to thank them. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the emotional highlight when Dot Davis showed up to play in the Saturday Night Special, surrounded by children and grandchildren. Nice to see Dot. Besides Jennifer’s runner-up in the main tournament our Grass Roots had many fine results. 13th round-(tie 5-6) Eric Davis 11th round (tie 9-12) Megan Player and proud father John Medeiros. (Almost certainly the highest Father-Daughter finish ever) 10th round (tie 13-16) Fran Ward 8th round (tie 25-32) Jeff Seidenstein 7th round (in the money and tied 33-48) Andy Wagner, Luther, Liz Henderson, Barbara Gooden (outlasting Jerry), and yours truly. See you next Monday. Joe G 919-847-4704 [email protected]

Quite a week. Liz won the week for the second time. So far, the only two time winner, Liz now has a 5 point lead on Catherine and Liz has a 4 that should be dropped soon. Catherine takes over second, one point ahead of Allan. Allan was delighted with his 12 and where it placed him until he had to draw and drew the odd card leaving him with 12 and no partner. It got worse when Milwaukee surrendered 2 in the top of the ninth to lose by one run at home.
The members of the pool placed first through ninth out of the 23 players this week. The 5 Raleigh women occupy 5 of the first 7 places. 9 players have played all 8 weeks. Time for some drops to occur. Tom’s Cardinals hit a grand slam in the top of 10th and held on for a one run win. Alas, no Grand Slam for Tom as he narrowly escaped a string of pearls, scoring a 2 for the low score of the season. Hmmmm. Tom. Would you trade the Cardinals Grand Slam for one of your own? One other note, the two first place teams tied at 20 points 9 wins plus 3 spread. Kristy had to go to the third tiebreak and the winner had 157, 7 more than the second team. I’m told that Catherine has not seen that before. Third tiebreak. A week off from Grass Roots. Go Raleigh, keep that prize money at home. Good Luck everybody. It’s getting boring!!! The three podium spots are still held down by Liz, Megan, and Catherine. Allan has won the same number of games as Catherine but is one skunk point behind just off the podium in 4th.
With Jennifer in 6th and Kristy in 8th, the Club 58 women hold 5 of the top 8 spots. Kristy had the highest score at 12/6 among the pool members this week. Another poor week for the pool at large. For the third straight week, there were 8 single digit scores among the pool participants. Only 5 double digit scores in the pool this week. The top 4 people all scored 9 or below, allowing the middle of the pack to catch up a bit. And with the total pool spread points coming in at MINUS 349, it means that that the non-participants are beating up on those in the pool through week 7. Seven weeks, seven different nightly winners. With the National Open break coming up 7/29, there is one more week to go to week 8. After which many of you can start dropping your single digit scores. Watch out for Liz. Not only is she in the lead, but she has a 4 to drop, Megan has a 6. Steady Catherine has an 8 as her lowest. The swami sez that it will take 96 points to make the podium, an average of 12 per week over the best 8 weeks. Bets can be placed on the over/under of 95 ½. Joe G 919-847-4704 [email protected] Here we are, 6 weeks in, the halfway point.
On the heels of the magnificent win in the Women’s World Cup Of Soccer in France by the USWNT, the Club 58 women stormed back this week. But for Jeff Seidenstein’s 19/8, they would have swept 1-2-3-4. There were 8 single digit scores of the 14 players this week. Of the 6 double digit scores, the women had 4 of them. Individually, Liz wears the yellow jersey this week with 72 points. She is averaging (!!) 12 points a week with a 4 in her first week. Talk about coming from behind. Megan comes in second, 2 points behind. Two points back of Megan, steady Catherine completes the podium sweep for Team Estrogen as she edges a fallen Allan for third by 9 spread points. Allan lost 5 single digit games in his 3 win 6 loss week this week. Other notables, Jennifer had a 28 hand and later, in a different hand, a cut short of 29. And if it weren’t for a 1 point (dead hole!!) loss in game 1, Jeff would have had a 21/9 and a clean sweep. Now that’s a nice card! There have been 377 wins total by the contestants with 48 skunks. And it seems like the non-combatants are having their way with the pool members. The pool as a whole has a minus 212 spread meaning outside forces are having their way with you all collectively. Two more weeks before the national Open break. Two more weeks to get your first 8 weeks in the books. And then once you have played your first 8 weeks, you can start dropping those single digit scores. Joe G 919-847-4704 [email protected] Have a pleasant 4th.
This last Monday was not a very good week for most of the field. 8 out of 15 in the field had 8 points or less. I kept hearing the phrase “This will be my drop week.” repeated until it seemed to echo off the tavern walls. On my way out, I heard the server remarking that for some reason alcohol sales were way up for the group that night. Hmmmm. Causation or Correlation? The week before wasn’t much better. 7 out of the 13 who played on 6/24 scored 9 or less. Two weeks in a row, over ½ the field had 9 or less. Women continue to hold down 3 of the top 4 spots with Megan edging Catherine for fourth on the basis of games won. Allan was the week’s winner and has what looks like a commanding 7 point lead, averaging almost 12 ½ points per week. But both Liz in second and Megan in third have what will almost surely be a drop week in their current totals. Just by coincidence, we will not play on 7/29 because of the National Open here in Raleigh. (HAVE YOU SENT IN YOUR REGISTRATION TO MEGAN???) We will be 8 weeks into the contest by then and on 8/5 when we resume for the last 4 weeks, I suspect there will be drop weeks taken after the 8/5 results are in. We’ll start to get a better picture of who is really leading as scores of 4 and 6 start to drop. Peter Amacher still has the highest one week total at 17. And the fields total spread so far this year is -32. Joe G 919-847-4704 [email protected] |
